Psilocybin & Energy Psychology: Working With the Subconscious Mind

psilocybin and energy psychology for integration

A psilocybin journey can help you see something you haven't been able to see, such as a pattern, underlying belief, old wound, relationship, or way of understanding yourself. Sometimes the realization is so clear that you wonder how you could ever go back to seeing things the way you did before. And then you go home.

This is one of the reasons I believe so deeply in psilocybin integration. Having an insight and living from that insight are not necessarily the same thing. In my work as a Licensed Psilocybin Facilitator and Transformational Coach, one of the tools I offer for this part of the process is PSYCH-K®, an energy psychology and belief-change method designed to work with subconscious beliefs.

I offer PSYCH-K during preparation when it feels supportive, but I find it particularly valuable after a psilocybin journey, when clients are beginning to make sense of what they experienced and asking: How do I take what I learned in my journey and actually live it?

Integrating Psilocybin Insights Into Everyday Life

I often describe psychedelics as a teacher and a tool. Psilocybin can help you temporarily step outside your usual ways of thinking and perceiving. You may recognize old repetitive patterns, reconnect with suppressed emotions, or see yourself and life from an entirely different perspective.

But the journey is only one part of the process. In clinical research, preparation and integration are consistently included as part of the overall psilocybin framework, helping people prepare for the experience and make sense of what emerges afterward. Integration is where you begin bringing the wisdom of the journey into your everyday life. Maybe an old habit becomes easier to recognize and change, you finally feel ready to set a boundary or have an important conversation, or you begin trusting yourself in a way you couldn't before.

The insight is the beginning. Integration is how you live it. Sometimes, that means working directly with the underlying beliefs that may be keeping old subconscious programs running.

What Is Energy Psychology? Introducing PSYCH-K®

Energy psychology is a broad category of approaches that combine psychological processes with mind-body techniques. There are many modalities within this field. PSYCH-K is the method I use. Created by Robert M. Williams, M.A., PSYCH-K is a belief-change process designed to help you identify subconscious beliefs that conflict with what you consciously want and create more supportive beliefs aligned with your intentions.

Here's a simple way to understand why that matters. You can consciously know I am safe and still not feel safe. You can know I don't need to control everything and still find yourself gripping tightly when life becomes uncertain. You can believe I am worthy of love while continuing to repeat patterns that suggest otherwise.

Knowing something intellectually doesn't always mean you believe it subconsciously.

PSYCH-K gives you a structured way to work with that space between what you consciously want and what you may believe underneath. During a session, we clarify what you want to shift and create positive Belief Statements that reflect how you want to think, feel, respond, or live. We then use muscle testing and specific PSYCH-K techniques to work with those beliefs at the subconscious level.

PSYCH-K as another empowering way of listening inward, and that’s one of the reasons I find it so beneficial for psychedelic integration.

Why the Weeks After a Psilocybin Journey Matter

After a psilocybin journey, your brain may be more open to change. This is connected to neuroplasticity, your brain’s natural ability to learn, adapt, and create new patterns. Research suggests the weeks following a journey may be an especially important time for integration.

Psilocybin is associated with neuroplasticity and increased cognitive flexibility, with research showing greater cognitive flexibility for at least four weeks after a therapeutic psilocybin journey. This creates an opportunity to work with new perspectives, behaviors, and beliefs while the mind is more open to change.

It can be a powerful time to work with the subconscious beliefs that came to the surface during your journey. If psilocybin helped you see an old belief more clearly, PSYCH-K gives you a way to continue working with it during integration and create beliefs that better support the life you want to live.

How I Use PSYCH-K® After a Psilocybin Journey

This is where these two parts of my work come together. A journey may show you how much you try to control everything, for example. Underneath that pattern may be deeper beliefs about safety, trust, uncertainty, or fear. During integration, we can explore those beliefs and create new ones such as I am safe when I release control or I trust myself as life unfolds.

Your journey might reveal something completely different. Maybe you recognize a belief that you’re not worthy of love, that you need to rush your healing, or that you have to be perfect to be enough. PSYCH-K gives us a way to take that awareness deeper and work with the subconscious beliefs that may still be supporting an old pattern.

Integration doesn’t have to mean analyzing every detail of your journey. Sometimes it comes down to a much simpler question: What did this experience show you, and what would it look like to truly believe it and live it?

PSYCH-K® for Psilocybin Preparation

Although integration is where I most love combining PSYCH-K with psychedelic work, it can also be a powerful tool for preparation. It’s completely natural to feel excited, curious, nervous, or uncertain before a psilocybin journey, especially when you don’t know exactly what the experience will bring.

PSYCH-K can help you prepare by working with beliefs around trust, safety, surrender, self-compassion, and openness to the unknown. Depending on what comes up for you, we might create Belief Statements such as I trust my inner wisdom, I am safe to surrender, or I trust myself to meet whatever arises.

I also like to help clients understand the difference between intention and expectation. An intention gives your journey direction, while an expectation tells it what it’s supposed to look like. The goal is to arrive with a clear intention while staying open to an experience that may unfold very differently—and perhaps more meaningfully—than you could have planned.

PSYCH-K® Found Me After My First Psychedelic Journey

My relationship with PSYCH-K is personal. I discovered it in 2018 after my first ayahuasca retreat in Peru—or, perhaps more accurately, it found me. At first, I thought it sounded too good to be true, but I was curious enough to sign up for one workshop.

That one workshop turned into me spending a month in Portland continuing my training all the way through Master Facilitation. Years later, I still use PSYCH-K in my own life and with my clients.

Next to psychedelics, I’ve found PSYCH-K to be one of the greatest tools for transformation.

What I love about both is that they can help you access your own inner wisdom and see yourself and your life from a new perspective.

From Insight to Transformation

Psilocybin and PSYCH-K don’t “fix” you; they empower you to change. Both are tools that can help you access what already exists within you: awareness, perspective, and inner wisdom. Psilocybin can illuminate a door you couldn’t see before. Integration is how you walk through it.

For me, this is where the real beauty of psychedelic work begins. An insight becomes a conversation. A realization becomes a boundary. Self-love becomes the way you speak to yourself on a difficult day. Surrender becomes what you practice when life doesn’t go according to plan. The goal isn’t simply to have a transformative experience. It’s to allow the experience to transform how you live.

If you’d like support bringing the insights from your journey into everyday life, I offer PSYCH-K sessions for psilocybin integration through Cate Ritter Wellness, remotely via Zoom or in person in Bend, Oregon. PSYCH-K can also be used during preparation and included in my Psilocybin Retreats at Juniper Preserve.

The journey may last a day. What you do with it can continue unfolding for years.
